Understanding and Utilizing Tags in Our Web Application
Tags are a versatile feature in our web application, designed to enhance user experience by allowing for the customization and detailed organization of assets. This feature enables users to assign special attributes to individual or bulk assets, facilitating efficient asset management and retrieval through custom queries among other functionalities. Tags consist of two components: a tag name and a tag value. This article will guide you through understanding what tags are, their importance, and how you can effectively utilize them within our platform.
What are Tags?
Tags are user-defined labels that can be attached to assets within our web application. Each tag is made up of a tag name and a tag value, forming a key-value pair that serves as a flexible method for categorizing and organizing assets based on specific criteria or attributes. For example:
customer:BEST COMPANY
region:Midwest
These tags indicate that an asset is associated with the customer "BEST COMPANY" and located in the "Midwest" region, respectively.
Why to use Tags?
- Customization: Tags allow for the customization of asset categorization beyond the predefined fields, accommodating unique organizational needs.
- Efficiency: By tagging assets, users can quickly filter and locate specific assets or groups of assets within the platform.
- Versatility: Tags can be applied to individual assets or in bulk, offering flexibility in asset management.
- Enhanced Queries: Tags support custom queries, enabling users to compile and analyze data based on specific tag criteria.
How to Utilize Tags

- Example: searching for tags.customer=="My Company" will return all assets tagged with My Company as a customer.
- NOTE: (Tags are CASE sensitive, so "customer" and "Customer" are different tags)
- Advanced Searches: Combine multiple tag criteria in your searches to narrow down results for complex queries, enhancing your data analysis capabilities.
- Example: searching for tags.customer=="My Company" && tags.region=="Midwest" will return all assets in the Midwest region for customer My Company.
Managing Tags
- Edit Tags: Tags can be edited by removing the tag and creating a new tag name or value as needed.
- Remove Tags: To remove a tag from an asset, edit the asset, select the tag, and click the "x" icon to delete or remove the tag.
Best Practices for Tagging
- Consistency: Maintain consistent naming conventions for tag names and values to ensure data uniformity and easier retrieval. (Tags are CASE sensitive, so "customer" and "Customer" are different tags)
- Relevance: Use relevant and specific tags that will be useful for filtering and querying assets.
- Simplicity: Keep tags simple and straightforward for ease of use and understanding.
Conclusion
Tags are a powerful feature within our web application, offering an efficient way to organize, categorize, and retrieve assets based on custom-defined criteria.
